mik used to be my login name. It is an acronym for: Micro-kid. Hence the
capital K in MiKTeX.

why is it pronounced with a short 'i'?
Perhaps because I don't speak German,
I would have expected maybe "meektex" as a pronunciation.
So I'm going to guess: it is a pronunciation of the 'i'
that "works" (i.e., is recognizable) in both English and German.
