Dear MiKTeX users, this is to inform you that I've sent the message below to the maintainer of the 'minitoc' package. I'm quite sure that many of you faced the same problem and are considering a similar request. Comments are welcome. -- Uwe ,---- | Dear Jean-Pierre, | | first I want to thank you for the very useful 'minitoc' package. But | what I want to address is its size. Building the documentation creates | two PDF files with 27MB each. This is mainly due to the graphic material | about languages. | | I wonder whether it is necessary to make 'minitoc' such a huge package. | I think this causes (unnecessary) difficulties in downloading and | distributing the packages because it bloats the repositories | considerably. In the MiKTeX distribution the 'minitoc' package is now | the second hugest package after 'cm-super'. Therefore I have uninstalled | 'minitoc' now because I simply can't await 60MB to be downloaded each | time 'minitoc' is updated. | | Yes, downstream data rate is still an issue for the majority of users. | Therefore I would like to encourage you to consider removing those bulky | maps from the 'minitoc' documentation. Maybe you find a way to make this | (though informative) material available for download on some website | instead of distributing it through the 'minitoc' package. | | Kindest regards | Uwe `---- |

If the situation cannot be improved, then we can split the minitoc package (minitoc.tar.lzma & minitoc-doc.tar.lzma). The TL folks do it in this way. |

To my thinking this solves the problem only partially. It still bloats the MiKTeX repository (which no longer fits on a CD now) and actually, when a package updates one should also get the up-to-date documentation. My opinion is that the 'minitoc' documentation contains stuff that has nothing to to with the package and is not important to the user. It's not the purpose of 'minitoc' to inform about geographical language issues. The maintainer actually just dumps wikipedia material into the 'minitoc' documentation and continues on bloating it with nonessential material (with the latest update the .lzma file swelled from 45MB to 60MB). I'll keep on discussing this with Jean-Pierre. I think the only satisfactory solution is to flatten the package documentation and get back to the core of important things again. -- Uwe |

This comes additionally. It might be helpful if more people mailed their objections to the 'minitoc' maintainer (in a cordial manner, of course). -- Uwe |
