Dear miktex users, Thanks in advance. I need your assistance to solve this problem. I am new to miktex and I have basicmiktex2.7.3248 on Windows XP. I have received this example from the web site. exlabel.tex: \documentclass[final,letterpaper,twoside,12pt]{article} %\input latex_mac.tex \begin{document} This is a \emph{very} simple document. This is something written in $math \ mode$. It's used for inline equations such as $E = m c^2$. The displayed formula mode is for things like \[ I = I_0 e^{\frac{e V} {k T}} \] and so on. If we want numbers for our equations, we can use \begin{equation} F = m a \label{eq:eg3a1} \end{equation} and then use the number, such as Equation{~\ref{eq:eg3a1}} in the text. \end{document} If I run pdflatex exlabel.tex for the first time, it creates *.aux, *.log and *.pdf file. I have seen in *.pdf file, Equation ?? appears. In one of the lines in the *.log file, LaTeX Warning: Reference `eq:eg3a1' on page 1 undefined on input line 17. Then I run once again, pdflatex exlabel.tex without deleting *.aux, *.log and *.pdf file. I have seen in *.pdf file, Equation 1 appears. How can I solve this in the first run? Once again, thank you very much for the time you have given. The \label \ref facility was implemented using the aux file, and this is primarily due to the onepass logic used by TeX. Thus you need often to run TeX twice to have all references solved. In connection with index and bibliography you even need to run it more times. You could just try to run texify in place of pdflatex: this will in general run latex twice and also run bibtex, makeindex and other utility if needed.
