I would suggest to not use chapter. An article exists of section and subsections. If you submit an article with a chapter to a journal or conference, they wont be too happy. Chapters only belong in books and reports. Now, I don't want to be the one saying RTFM, but you should have a look at the "not so short intro to LaTeX2e", which you can find on CTAN. It will give you a better understanding of LaTeX, so that you can solve some of your problems and now what information you have to supply us when you have a question.
