Dear Christoph, the problem, at least in my MiKTeX installation, is that small caps are not available as a bold font (which would be required in a subsection heading). If you can accept that the 'L' is not bold then \documentclass[a4paper,headsepline,ngerman,11pt,liststotoc,bibtotoc]{scrbook} \newcommand{\GFS}{GDP-$\beta$-\textsc{\mdseries l}-Fucose-Synthetase} \begin{document} \subsection{Use of \GFS} \end{document} worked in my case. Otherwise you could try something like \newcommand{\GFS}{GDP-$\beta$-\textrm{\small{L}}-Fucose-Synthetase} Hope it helped a bit.
