If you mean MASTeX (not AMSLATEX) then put at the beginning the plain tex
command \parindent 12pt (or any other measure). The each paragraph will
be indented 12 points.
If you simply want to indent a line (regardless of paragraph indentation)
you preceed it with \hskip 12pt.
If you have a paragraph indentation and you want to cancel it
for a specific paragraph, put \flushpar before the paragraph (or \noindent
plain tex command).
