Not to be snide, but judging from your code, you haven't really had a very good introduction to LaTeX. I suggest the following: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/lshort/english/lshort.pdf Also, since this question relates to LaTeX, and not MiKTeX specifically, it would really be more appropriate to ask it in comp.text.tex, which you can access through Google Groups if you don't have usenet access. Generally speaking, you'll find a larger audience and get a faster (and often more comprehensive) response on general LaTeX questions such as this one. At any rate, these commands of yours never actually start an appendix. They merely extend the previous chapter using some highly questionable markup. The \appendixname macro does not set the title of your appendix chapter, and \textbf is never appropriate for chapter titling. Here's why: First of all, \appendixname stores the word that appears in the chapter headings of your appendices (by default in English, it is simply the word "Appendix"). Second, appendix chapters works just like regular chapters. You don't say what \documentclass you're using, but in most classes the command \appendix resets the chapter counter and changes it from numerals to letters, among other things. Third, the heading continues to show the name of the last chapter because that's exactly how it is supposed to work. If you want to change it, you have to use a \chapter command. Try the following: \appendix \chapter{MY VERY LONG APPENDIX} ... text of appendix And if you want to better understand what the \appendixname macro does, try this: \appendix \renewcommand{\appendixname}{Cecal Appendage} \chapter{MY VERY LONG APPENDIX} ... text of appendix Finally, if you're really dead set on not having a space between the word "Appendix" and its chapter number/letter, try \renewcommand{\appendixname}{Appendix\ignorespaces}.
