    I'm using MiKTeX 2.4, in particular the latex command.

    The '>' character, which to my knowledge is a perfectly normal character in text mode, appears as a reversed question mark on the .dvi file.

    Analogously, the '<' character appears as a reversed exclamation mark.

    They are rendered correctly if occuring in math mode.

    What am I doing wrong?

      You have to use the T1 fontencoding:
      \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

      or try in text mode

      \textless for <
      \textgreater fo >

      > is \textgreater
      < is \textless

      I guess...in text mode
