Hi there. I am trying to demonstrate a simple multiplication

(x+2)(y+3).

I want to draw an arrow from x to y with a 1 in between it to show

it is step one, then draw an arrow from x to 3 with a 2 in between

it to show it is step two. Then draw an arrow (underneath) from 2

to y with a 3 in between it to show it is step three and finally

another arrow from 2 to 3 with a 4 between it.

I have tried using the package xy but could not get it to look what

I wanted.

\begin{displaymath}

\xymatrix{ (x+2)\ar@/^/[r]!U|1 \hspace*{-1cm}

\ar@/_3pc/@{->}[r]& (y+3)}

\end{displaymath}

Can anyone help?
