With the latest basic installer 2.9.5872 the default option is to install only for the current user, no matter if the current user has admin privileges.
The default setting should be to install for all users of the PC if the user has admin permissions (as it was since ever before). The reason is that more than 90% of the users click in an installer just next. I got now several bug reports that LyX is not working because they installed LyX as admin for all users of the PC but since they used MiKTeX's default setting, MiKTeX is not available for other users than the admin and thus LyX can only be used with the admin account. But the idea of admin accounts is to maintain the system not for daily work. Therefore especially in companies and universities the admin account is to setup the system for all users.
If you would keep the current default setting, is there an option to start the basic installer with the default setting "for all users"?
many thanks and best regards
Thank you for the report. The installer can be started with option --shared (install MiKTeX for all users). Hope this helps/
Many thanks, that helps me so far.
However in general I think that the default should be reset to all users if the user is admin. I bet also many admins won't read the installer pages and just cklick next with the default settings as they always did it.
I will fix this in one of the next installer versions: if an administrator runs the installer, the first (install for all users) option will be pre-selected.
Many thanks Christian, great work of fixing all the many bugs!
I tested the new installer thoroughly and can confirm that, this bug, bug 2266 and bug 2435 are fixed.
Btw. the new MiKTeX installer came just in tuime for the new LyX 2.2.0 release so that I could bundle it.
best regards Uwe
