To be sure I've just updated MikTeX and the package works wonderfully in Win7 and up.
I have tested it in XP SP3, and I'm reporting the bug also because it may refer to 32b architecture.
Opening TexWork the screen is without many icons as you can see from the picture.
If I choose to open a file, it gives the attached error, with more information and thechical information attached as well.
Please note that the engine works perfectly: if I open a recent project, I can texify it without errors. So it looks like a simple interface error of TexWork.
Btw, Happy new Year to everybody!
Alberto
Just to inform that today I've updated MiKTeX portable, but the symptoms are absolutely the same.
Sorry, but I don't think that a fix can be made available in the near future.
Thank you for the info Christian! We will wait!
This is heavily disturbing, as texworks is basically unusable with this (e.g. the find-dialogue is totally broken and calling preferences causes the program to crash). a fix would be highly appreciated.
Just tested with the last update a few minutes ago: to inform you that everything is exactly the same.
I provide an installer for the TeX frontend LyX and got several user reports that MiKTeX has several problems on Win XP. However, Win XP is dead - it is a security risk to use it and many third-party programs already removed libraries and code that were necessary for Win XP. So in my opinion it is impossible to properly support Win XP anymore.
My report was done because of the doubt the issue could depend on a 32 bit
architecture.
By the way, I would like to note that LaTeX is often used as a
typewriter, so I don't see any risk using it on an offline XP machine.
Please consider also the percentage of XP users in the world, so it's
not true that it is dead. In fact Windows hasn't retired the updates yet,
even for normal users. Try and see.
See also the number of Open source and free programs that still support
XP (Firefox, 7z-, Avira, and so on).
Anyway I'm sending you my best regards.

Nothing new with the last Portable TeX update made just now!
By the way, I repeat that the main issue is in the GUI of Open Texwork function, because every other function works perfectly, including the Open Recent Function, compiling LaTeX and so on...
how is this still not fixed? its just a gui glitch for ffs.
Updated just now: Exactly the same issue.
We are running Miktex in a computer pool win Win XP for about another year. A fix of this GUI glitch would be much appreciated.
I encountered the same problem.
Using dbgview I gathered attached Information
But does the XP compatible version of texworks work also in
Win7--8--8.1--10 ?
If so, why not temporarily embed it in the official portable version?

Bugs: #2425
Please note that I am not actively working on the correction of the XP related TeXworks bugs.
If you need a working TeXworks on your XP box, then I would recommend that you download the official TeXworks installer from here: http://www.tug.org/texworks/
Last edit: Christian Schenk 2016-04-21
I couldn't use the last official TeXworks installer from http://www.tug.org/texworks/ with the last version of LaTeX portable, because on XP it is completely blind as with the embedded version of LaTeX. I could get a decent version of LaTeX portable for XP, starting from version 2.9.5987, then usung the last official TeXworks installer from http://www.tug.org/texworks/ . Several drawbacks, anyway:
. The rerun to resolve links isn't automatic
. Added dictionaries ar not accessed
. ...
Thank you so much, Christian! :-)
the newest version of textworks from there works nicely ans also appears to be improved compared to 0.4. a update of the miktex-texworks version should both fix this problem and make it better. but individually the problem is solved for me. thx

I tried the last version in XP and I discovered that things are even worse: now nothing can be seen in TeXworks. The engine works, but you have to work seeing nothing, completely blind!
Hi Christian,
because #2425 probably takes time to be solved, is it possible to access a
previous portable version, working in XP? Unfortunately I've deleted it
since August...
Thanks and forgive my question
