Think you could add an option "Mute Toggle"? So when you push the mute button, it mutes. And when you unpush (?) the muting stops? Same as PTT, but then PTM (Push to Mute)
This feature already exists. Right click the tray icon and select Setup Shortcut. The key that you press will act as an on off switch. Based on my keyboard layout, I use the Pause button.
