With the current java MMAPI it seems possible, but where are we going to get the voice codecs like speex and alike,
i think you shd just wait for JCP to release a Voice Codec API JSR, may be then you can get all the support, also google's way of doing things is tricky, their API's are compliant with Jabber/XMPP but their semantics are not documented, i would be great if google guys release google talk as opensource rather than libjingle.

YEs plesae, there are other softwares like FRING ... www.fring.com which support voip thru mobile. Currently they only support symbian os (nokia , sony ericsson) I have motorolla A1200.
Mgtalk is running very smooth on it and if you guys and pull of the voice supoort that would be really a great job done.
