Instead of rebooting the machine, it just shuts it down. I tried by using the "powerdown" program, renamed as "reboot"

Have you tried "reboot" with the stock kernel? And is it the latest (from source) SVN version?

Tried with 1.5.2_b1, both built-in powerdown and the lates one from SVN. None of them reboots the machine, both shut it down.
