Recently installed on Redhat 6.2. Everything working OK except the database is not being updated with cron (i.e. the news and other features are not being updated). I installed the two lines in the cron table. The command lines are pointing to the right place. The cron table looks OK to me. Restarted Apache. No difference. Used Webmin to run the cron job. No difference. Any suggestions would be welcome.

There are a bunch of little things that can go wrong.
One likely is that the cron job has to be able to log into mysql (password problems)
The cron job will run as root, so try this:
1) log in or su to root
2) cd to /etc or whereever the crontab is setup
3) execute the lines yourself - but remove the "2>/dev/null" because that hides any errors
So for :
18 1 * * * root cd /home/metadot/metadot/; perl metadotd.pl -o >/dev/null 2>/dev/null
Use this at the prompt:
cd /home/metadot/metadot/; perl metadotd.pl -o >/dev/null

Thanks for the tip! Once I removed the 2>/dev/null, the problem was obvious: incorrect permissions -- duh!! We can add this to the Metadot for Dummies book.

In my situation, my cron is working. Thanks for the tip lweston on how to check that. But I notice some:
"Use of uninitialized value in hash element at Metadot/Config.pm"
Also, towards the bottom of this message, you will notice
"Cannot open channels/...." is this normal?
Just wondering if I should do anything or leave it alone cause if it aint broke, don't fix it :)
