#79 Metadotd chokes on server outage

During the recent server outage of OSDN, I noticed
that because I have Slashdot and Freshmeat as some of
the channels Metadot checks, that it caused Metadot
to exit with an error - without updating sites that
were online.
It reported the error like this:
#[channel url] 500 Server error

And then metioned a "pipe" error, and quit. It didn't
resume updating GizmoTools or channels until Slashdot
came back online the next day.

I am using version 3.1.2.
