In vcglib/vcg/complex/trimesh/clean.h line 1158 in revision 3948, i is defined as an index into the float array sides which has 3 elements. In line 1161, PSDist passes those i values which range from 0..3 as defined into f->P1(i) etc. f->P1(i) only accepts values of 0..2.
