It would be nice to be able to (easily) filter the list of nodes on the
main index page to exclude (for example) non-operational nodes,
nodes without active interfaces, nodes more than a certain
distance from one's own node, etc. Currently the only way to filter
this list is to sort it by a column and set one's preferences to limit
the number of nodes displayed.

This could easily explode into an overly complex QBE undertaking,
but a few simple criteria will hopefully provide good bang for buck.

This wouldn't have to be implemented as part of the main index
page (it could be a new page), but the huge size of the index page
(currently over half a megabyte just for the HTML) implies a
shorter, filtered default list might be a good idea anyway.
