Thanks for this pointer, too! :) That constraint came from autoconf 2.13. I
just shuffled some stuff around in configure.in so the build system should now
deal correctly with non-present GLUT and demo directories.

Right now I'm still testing things out, but everything appears to work fine
and the CVS commit should not be far.
