[Mesa3d-dev] -no-install LDFLAG in demo dirs

I just stumbled across this:

In the subdirs book/, samples/, and xdemos/ the Makefile.am's each specify
an LDFLAG of -no-install. My gcc reports
gcc: unrecognized option `-no-install'.
The option is also present in demos/, but the line has been commented out.

Can anyone tell me what this option was intended for?
