I always get that error no matter what I do.

I've been using the CVS versions of all of those tools, so I figured I'd
try falling back to the versions you used. No luck, it gives me the
exact same error.

Please do. What's your GGI installation look like? Did you do anything
unusual there? I think that might be the problem. libtool tends to
barf when told to link a libtool-using package (like Mesa) with
alread-installed libtool convenience libraries (.la files, like LibGGI).
