I just ran the make on my mac and I got the same messages that you reported.
so perhaps they don't matter [I'm running pgplot with star just fine.]

Frank's README suggests that after doing the make you run some tests:

test the build:

% ./pgdemo1
  enter the following device driver when asked: /XWIN

% ./pgdemo1
  enter the following device driver when asked: /PNG


do those work for you?
