Hi Bob, Thank you for trying. I will try to run the script on the mac at linguistics to see if it works. I won't get around to it till later in the week. I'll let you know how the uninstall goes. Still a lot of unpacking and cleaning to do in this new house, it was an exhausting weekend. But really good to finally have our stuff and start to feel settled - first time really since leaving Angurugu 1 year ago! Have a good week. So I have uploaded the script on its own (not as an app) to sourceforge. So now to uninstall, you have to download uninstall_memory_place.sh to your desktop and then run the following command in terminal: sudo ~/Desktop/uninstall_memory_place.sh You will be required to enter your password. I know this is not as good as double clicking an app, but it is the best I can do for now. Hope you're settling in well. Bob PS I have attached the file so you can have a go, but it's the same as what you could download from sf.net <http://sf.net>. -- Sibella Herbert IT Project Officer, Northern Territory Library 0406 169 144 http://memoryplace.sourceforge.net/ |

James Leech - 5 Feb 08 - 10.41am Have been experimenting with Memory Place – all fine until this morning. Have messed up the PostgreSQL install somehow - trying to remove images that were 2 up… Uninstall not working. Oh well. At least it worked for a while! 5 Feb 08 - 2.34pm Got it working again! I searched online forums and managed to remove the offending install #1 and have a copy running without any of the sample database installed. I was playing around in Terminal and wondered if the software wanted root access (su) as opposed to admin access. Who knows. I had console running and it showed that the database was having trouble starting up. It's a twistd rabbit hole once you jump into PostgreSQL! But back to the GUI. The main glitch seems to be the ability to remove images once they are added. Videos and Sounds can be added and deleted, but not photo's. The image editing screen is also peculiar as it allows only linkages to animals, people and places - that are already in the database. Sometimes I can get the dropdown menu to display the 'other' option, but not always. I had encountered the firefox error also. Sound editing gave some interesting error messages. (sample attached) james James at 6.25pm Another interesting bug. For some reason when I tried installing the demo on top of ‘my version’ of memory place, all the areas worked except for the pictures viewing area – never to work again. Video and audio good, photo’s bad. I keep wondering if there is a setup which is significantly different within the database for the photo’s as opposed to how the video and sound objects work. The errors were indicating that the images weren’t in the correct directories within the Memory Place package file. I manually opened the package and placed the file it was looking for in the folder and was able to produce a new error. For example, it was looking in a folder than contains 247.jpg for 246.jpg. Kinda like it all got jittered along one line within the reference table. Only one copy of firefox can be open at a time." - have you come across this one??? the fun continues.... thanks for your feedback. |

I just get a QuickTime symbol but nothing happens when I click it. Can you explain why there are multiple copies of things showing up? Eg video names and people names. Julie |

Hi all - just talking to Jay earlier about file formats and storage of different qualities of media items within databases etc. For the record, when a tif is entered into MP, it is stored in the following way: allocated a number, eg 165 inside the 'image' folder, open 'url' folder go to folder called '165', inside this folder is stored: 1. the original tif - same size as one entered (eg 2.8MB) 2. a jpg (eg 140KB) 3. a 'display' folder, inside which is jpg of similar or smaller size to above (eg 136KB) 4. a 'thumb' folder, inside which is jpg of smaller size to above (eg 24KB) NB all of above images still retain the original file name allocated before the file was entered into MP. Sorry for my earlier confusion on issue Jay. Regards, Sib -- Sibella Herbert Project Officer, Anindilyakwa Land Council 0406 169 144 http://memoryplace.sourceforge.net/ |

Hi all, Great news, I successfully downloaded and installed MP and sample data onto a new mac in the Linguistics office. Everything works really well, except for the sound number 1 - the audio player is not working for some reason, it only shows the QuickTime symbol. Small issue of course. Good luck with your install Jay, I hope you get it up and running real soon. Bob could you please explain where the folder structure sits on the computer - it is different from the Memory Place i have on my machine. Bob hope your moves goes smoothly, please feel free to call me on 0406 169 144 or today till 3pm territory time on 08 8987 7195 (Angurugu Library). Otherwise I will try to call you later in the day. Hi, I have just been thinking a bit about how we might go about installing MP in the Angurugu library, and I have realised that there might be some difficulty in getting the data from Our Story into MP. I'm really not sure about how well the importing script which I hacked together for the purpose last time will perform. It might be that changes to the data model might really throw it for a loop. Basically there is no way to know until we test it, but by then I will probably no longer be involved with the project. Ideally we would have time to write a new import script that uses all of the features that we have developed for installing the Sample Data, so that instead of directly importing entities into the database (as the old import script does), it would create an installer from the Our Story export which could then be used to install into MP. Second best would be to rework the existing script so that we know it functions sensibly and is reasonably easy to update in the future. At the moment it is quite a mess. Anyway, the main problem is that I can't guarantee that the script will do a good job, and I probably won't be around to fix it... any ideas? Bob |

Hi Everyone, just letting you know that I have uploaded the latest installers, I believe they are fully functional and bug free! Thanks Jay for all your patience as we have ironed out the many frustrating bugs. I have fixed up the sourceforge download page too, it should be a bit more intuitive if you are downloading from a mac. Let me know how you go, I have also included an uninstaller tool to automate removing Memory Place, it clears out the application as well as all the data and media, but doesn't remove PostgreSQL or Firefox in case they were there before. Hopefully that is the end of the installers for now, and I will be focussing on documentation for my last couple of days. Bob |

Hi All - I have been speaking to Jason Lee, who is working at AIATSIS on a project called OLCAP (Online Language Community Access Pilot). This is what he originally emailed me: I've done a little research on digital archives and am very excited about Memory Place. I have two questions concerning Memory Place: 1) when will it be ready? 2) can you merge some linguistic tools into Memory Place? The two linguistic tools I am talking about are: 1) ability to annotate audio/video with time-aligned transcription. 2) ability to link annotations with a lexicon. For our pilot project, we are using the IMDI database structure developed by MPI. It currently is able to link audio/video with time-aligned transcription. The lexicon tool is still in development. Our wish is that IMDI had an interface like Ara Irititja. Some links: http://olcap.aiatsis.gov.au/ http://www.mpi.nl/IMDI/ MPI is an international research centre with "lots of developers" and jason has suggested that i get in touch with them and find out if there is any possibilities for collaboration. they have a great back-end, and lots of money and resources are going into it, but jason says it totally lacks user-friendliness for community users and for data input. Have a look at his paper from the recent AIATSIS conference. Note the reference to MP on bottom of p5. go to http://www.aiatsis.gov.au/research_program/events2/aiatsis_conf2007 and go about 2/3 the way down the page - paper is listed under heading "Papers Presented at Conference". Would appreciate your feedback on the above when you get a chance. Regards, Sibella -- Sibella Herbert Project Officer, Anindilyakwa Land Council 0406 169 144 http://memoryplace.sourceforge.net/ |

Dear bob - I do hope that we will have funds next year (either from NTL or ALC) to get the project team together in Darwin, and get Ferdi involved if he is interested. I haven't given up on this idea. We will just have to wait and see how things pan out in the new year. I will let you know as soon as i do. At this stage, all we can do is work with that 19 hrs you have left. Finishing the installer is definitely no.1 priority. We need it up and operating from the website. Documentation - i think that it would be wise to do some documentation at that higher level - i think that would be more useful than hours spent talking to Ferdi at this stage. We do not yet know how involved Ferdi will be, so spending precious hours passing knowledge directly to him is premature at this stage. Instead written documentation will enable anyone in the future to understand the software. If Ferdi (or another programmer) becomes involved next year when we obtain further funding, then they will more than likely need to speak to you in addition to reading your documentation. At that time we will need to negotiate with you as to whether you could volunteer some time to the project, or require payment for time spent bringing the next programmer up to speed. At this stage it is impossible to predict when this may happen, as NT Library have not yet got to the stage of planning when and how they may spend on MP development. I would encourage you to send through an invoice for the hours you've done as soon as possible, to make sure you get paid for them, and avoid sending a really large invoice. ALC is struggling right now. I hope i was clear that the $2000 approved was to cover any unpaid hours at the time of the approval. As for timing, the sooner you can get the installer finalised the better, as there are quite a few people interested in testing it. Could you finalise documentation by early Jan? That way it will be all done before any potential project team meeting in mid-Jan. If we manage to get funds to get you up to Groote early 2008, then you can install MP in Angurugu, and bring across photos from Our Story into MP. otherwise i will have to ask you to send the mini-mac up so that i can set that up in the Angurugu Library. Do you think you could give me instructions for importing the Our Story photos into MP? Enjoy your shoes! ;) Regards, Sibella Bob Firth wrote: > Hi Sibella, > > I am sorry to report that ALC is unable to approve our new budget at > this time. Since the project has become much wider than just for Groote I think it would make sense to ask other people to get behind it too. ALC has already put in their fair share in a sense. Anyway, hopefully there will be money somewhere to keep things going. I have 19 hours to go from our final budget so there should be enough to get the last installer all finished off and to document a bit more of the code. I'm not really sure what is happening with handover any more, but it sounds like we won't be meeting in Darwin so there might be a bit more of a need for documentation at a higher level. Or I could save some hours to talk to Ferdi on the phone and try to lay things out for him. Last week I started working in a warehouse packing shoes, pretty boring but a nice change from a computer screen. I will do the last bit of work for MP over the next few weeks as I find time. Is there anything which needs to happen in a particular timeframe? I can be flexible to make sure it gets done by when we need it. Bob |

Hi there - How are you both going? Jay, how have you gone with reviewing those bugs and is MP behaving correctly on your mac? Bob, how's the documentation going, and how many hours do you have left in our interim budget of $2000?? I have continued to pursue an answer from Ross about the proposed budget, but alas he is still avoiding me. I today asked the accountant to chase an answer on my behalf! Will let you know as soon as i do. Bob, are you starting work elsewhere next week? What are your plans? Feel free to call me on 0412 722 644 or 02 4657 1548. look forward to hearing how things are going, sib -- Sibella Herbert Project Officer, Anindilyakwa Land Council 0406 169 144 http://memoryplace.sourceforge.net/ |

Hi All - very glad to hear that the installer and sample data are closer to being finalised. well done and thanks for the extra effort Jay. I think Bob has covered the bugs that need your attention - plenty there to keep you out of trouble! I'll just go back in my emails and check that there was nothing else - i sent you a list of stuff way back in Sept or sometime around then. will resend it to you. I am available any time if you need to discuss any bugs or issues with me. 0412 722 644. Jon has moved to Groote and has my usual mobile. regards, sib Bob Firth wrote: > Hey Jay, > > > > Well Bob and I have spent a good couple of hours on the phone and it > appears > > that we've finally got MP running smoothly on my machine. > > hurrah, sorry for the amount of effort it took! > > > Sample Data has also installed successfully.
