When adding a "thing" (eg person, animal, place) to a media item, and the database doesn't hold a record of that thing, currently you need to go the relevant area (eg people) and go through the process of adding a new thing. After you've added a new thing to the db, you then have to navigate back to the media item and then add the thing.

Instead of this we need to provide an uninterrupted workflow. Jay and Sib propose that we do the following:

See attached jpg for a visual interpretation!

1) "Add new label" and the drop down should be simplified to: Label: <<box for text>> Add

We are thinking that the text entered should be matched across tables of things - instead of specifying what type it is. This is keeping with the UI goal of not separating things into categories. Users will not have to decide what classification the thing fits into.

2) if the thing is not in database, a box could pop-up in middle of screen, saying "Can't find this" and asking what type of thing it is (so the correct entry form can be brought up). Possibly the divisions could be as simple as: person; animal/plant; place; thing.

3) then you would click Add

4) then the form for creating that new thing would come up in the middle of the screen.

5) it will be filled, and then when "save" is clicked, the pop-up disappears, and you are back to the media page, and the photo frame is ready to be located if relevant.

what do you think?

OK, I like the idea of searching across all types of thing.

I will work on this, I am starting to think of a way to do the popup within the page, which will avoid the problems which I was worried about going to a new page, the navigation won't be confusing, it will be like lightboxing an editing form...

Should we incorporate topics/keywords/tags into the same interface? There are a couple of choices:

    1) one text box two buttons (Add as keyword & Add as thing)
    2) two text boxes each with its own button

I'm not really sure what would be easier for people, the first option is probably faster for advanced users, but more confusing for others. Any thoughts?

Actually I just thought of another way to do it, perhaps keywords could be thought of as the alternative to use when the label isn't a person, place, animal or whatever. So maybe it doesn't even need to have a different button, and then if that keyword doesn't exist already then you can choose "other" in the pop-up window list.

I have implemented the first part of this for audio, if you update to the latest revision you can test it out, the labelling is much simpler although I haven't yet figured out how to offer the choice between two entities with the same name.

The second part of this bug is pretty much the same as bug 1545727 - creating a new entity when labelling, so I've closed that bug, and we can concentrate our efforts here. I'm bumping the priority to match the old bug.
