Quick Start

The MEI Score Editor is an Eclipse RCP-based (http://www.eclipse.org) editor for rendering, viewing and editing MEI files. The following instructions are meant as a quick start guide for getting the software to work.

System requirements

You should have a working Mac (OS X 10.6.8 and later) or PC (Windows 7 and later) with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 or later installed. For current Java 7 installation instructions please refer to the Java download pages.

Beside Java 7, Apple also provides a Java 6 Runtime Environment, especially for OS X 10.6. If no JRE is found on MEISE's startup on your Mac, OS X will ask you to let it install automatically from Apple's Software Update Service.

Download

You can download the current version of MEISE here.

Installation

Extract the downloaded ZIP archive (Meise_XXX.zip) into a working directory of your choice on your computer. You will then get a directory named MEI Score Editor, containing all application data. Installing and running MEISE needs no administrator privileges.

Application start and workspace definition

Double-click the executable file MEI Score Editor (with the bird icon) in the directory MEI Score Editor and you will get to an empty application window. Earlier versions of MEISE required to define a workspace directory location on start up. This isn't necessary anymore. MEISE will automatically create its workspace folder on first start up in your home directory named MEIseWorkspace. However, if you wish to define your own workspace or if you already have defined a workspace using older versions of MEISE, you can change the workspace configuration in the File menu under Switch Workspace > Other….

Updates and extensions

For enriching the functionalities of the MEISE, you can install content from other software sites via the update concept of Eclipse. Choose Help > Install New Software… and select the tool's update site. Two recommended tools already prepared for integration are the Subclipse SVN-Adapter and the Rinzo XML editor.
