I have 10'000s of pictures, all categorized with keywords. Some pictures are I would like to hide when showing them to friends as they are personal. So one solution would be to have two trees in parallel, one called "public", the other named "all" and underneath you will find the same complex hierarchy.
Pro: works right away, flexible to program
Con: all nodes will exist twice, most images will be found under both categories, makes database bigger
What if we would allow to turn on and off switches via the UPNP client? You open the mediatomb device from e.g. the PS3 and you will see PC-Directory, Music, Photos, Videos,.... and a node called "Switches". If you open that node a couple of artificial "images" are returned, e.g. the image called "Show private" is an image of 200x200 px witch a checkbox painted. If you select that image for viewing, it will show as a 200x200px image of an unselected checkbox as now you have switched it off.
The storage module takes the current setting of the switch in consideration and filters images with the keyword private.
