MediaTomb works great with my PS3, but not with Windows Media Player 11 running on Windows Vista SP1. Additionally, VLC lacks UPnP support on Windows. Result: no MediaTomb-compatible Media Renderer for Windows!
Are there plans to enable support for Windows Media Player 11? I can provide WireShark dumps of MediaTomb<->WMP11 communication, if need be.
I can only assume that they do similar stuff as the Xbox 360. If M$ wanted to be compatible, they'd follow the spec; sorry but my motivation on studying WMP logs is simply not there.
You could however try XMBC, I believe it should not only be usable on the older Xbox but also on a usual Windows/Linux PC, as far as I know it works well with MediaTomb as well as other UPnP compliant servers.
You may want to try MediaPortal which worked with MediaTomb the last time a tried it. http://www.team-mediaportal.com/
