this may be a stupid question, but im kinda new at this whole linux/server stuff. however ive noticed two different config.xml files, one in the /etc/mediatomb directory and another in the /$HOME/.mediatomb directory. which one do i edit?
The config.xml in /etc/mediatomb is generally used when MediaTomb is started as a system service. You should edit this file if MediaTomb is started automatically during boot. This file will most likely need root permissions to modify.
The config.xml in $HOME/.mediatomb is created when you start MediaTomb manually in a terminal as your user. This file is owned by your user.
in any case, you should always precise the full xml file path to the started daemon
