The MeCFES project is aimed at transferring scientific research into a solution for people with physical disabilities, a tool for the health care professional to use in rehabilitation or companies/organizations providing related services.

There are essentially three parts to the system
Software (for a host computer pc/mobile)
Firmware (for the embedded microprocessor)
Hardware (physical elements of the system)

MeCFES – Myoelectrically Controlled Functional Electrical Stimulation – is a method for restoring motor function lost due to upper motor neuron lesion in a way that the user has direct control over the movement. When a muscle contracts it is causing a weak electrical signal that can be measured on the skin over the muscle- even if the muscle is almost completely paralysed (paretic). At the same time the muscle can be electrically stimulated to contract. Combining these two principles the muscle can directly boost itself to obtain a greater amount of contraction.
The concept is applicable when the muscle (limb) is affected by an upper motor neurone lesion because in that case the motor nerve can be stimulated. the motor nerve can be stimulated.
