Hi all, I don't think we should get together tomorrow because Michael is probably camping. The weather has been great and I have not gotten an email from him. We'll just have our regular meeting on Friday. If anyone has significant objections let me know. ~Scott |

Should work now. I've never used the filter property before. The last statistics I checked showed that 7 passed 6 in the last couple months (and if it hasn’t I’m sure it will long before we release), but different statistics vary considerably on the entire subject. What I’m sure we can all agree upon is that IE7 is the current version of the most used browser. The flat black doesn’t look all that bad, but the site is currently designed for the transparency effect. For optimal prettiness without the effect, we would have to move the headphone image to not be blocked as much by the black bar. As I said earlier, because of the multi-platform nature of our product, I think it’s important that our website is designed for optimum prettiness in IE, Firefox, and Safari, not any one of the three. In this specific case, I don’t see how it’s much of an issue because they all support the effect. IE just requires different code to specify it because its transparency effect predates the CSS3 ‘opacity’. ~Eric From: mdn...@li... I personally don't have a problem with having a partially graded design, based on browser standards-support, but if you guys do, we can do something about it, I spose. We'd lose the opacity altogether, though. On Sun, May 25, 2008 at 3:17 PM, Eric Orth <eo...@cs...> wrote: Sorry, I thought I had said css, but I guess I wasn't clear. IE7 is the most used browser, so our website has to look just as pretty in it as in Firefox. Not that I really care (I think ie should just go die somewhere), but I think you can just put the three lines of opacity together in the CSS style-sheet. It just makes sure that it's transparent on anything that views it, even crappy IE. The three are, like eric said: filter:alpha(opacity=90); -moz-opacity:0.9; opacity: 0.9; Anyway, do what you want, Evan. I'd say it isn't a big deal. -Orion On 5/25/08 5:37 pm, "Evan Meagher" <eva...@gm...> wrote: > It's more of a matter of opinion on perspective, I'd say. It's more of a matter of opinion on perspective, I'd say. I don't think it looks bad with the flat black, just different. And IE7 isn't the most used browser. More people use IE6 than IE7, and according to w3schools<http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp>, more people use Firefox than either IE6 or 7 separately. I personally don't have a problem with having a partially graded design, based on browser standards-support, but if you guys do, we can do something about it, I spose. We'd lose the opacity altogether, though. On Sun, May 25, 2008 at 3:17 PM, Eric Orth <eo...@cs...> wrote: > Sorry, I thought I had said css, but I guess I wasn't clear. Sorry, I thought I had said css, but I guess I wasn’t clear. Anyway, the ‘opacity: 0.9;’ selector doesn’t work in IE, so you have to use ‘filter:alpha(opacity=90);’. You might as well also add ‘-moz-opacity:0.9;’ for compatibility with some older versions of Mozilla. And it is a big deal. IE7 is the most used browser, so our website has to look just as pretty in it as in Firefox. We can get away with ‘good enough’ in older browsers, but because we are making a multi-platform product, our website has to look its best in the current versions of Firefox, IE, and Safari. ~Eric From: mdn...@li... Oh, are you just talking about the transparency of the #container div? That's CSS opacity, not PNG transparency. It's a CSS3 selector that IE doesn't support, which I knew going in. Shouldn't be a big deal. People with browsers that don't support the opacity property will just get the flat gray. I don’t really care about IE6 because it’s an old browser anyway, but nothing on our site is transparent in IE7 either. I don’t believe there should be any significant barriers to transparency for IE7. We’re just not doing it yet. ~Eric From: mdn...@li... i've been thinking a bit about RPC on the daemon. instead of using platform specific libraries like DBus and COM, my current thought is to embed a webserver and access perform RPC using a REST interface. This is my reasoning: Pros: * it would reduce the amount of platform specific code. DBus is nice, but COM is less nice, and i don't even know what to do about OSX. * it makes a web client interface *a lot* easier. Cons: * REST isn't stateful, so we would have to poll for all notifications. * more code in the daemon, to parse HTTP requests. * libraries like DBus make it easy to generate client bindings to wrap method calls, whereas for a REST api we would need to do some extra work parsing the HTTP response. with REST, we can interface with the daemon thru a web client using regular AJAX techniques, which would be *very* cool. i think the more code argument is nullified by 1) the fact that we would have just one piece of code for RPC, instead of separate platform pieces, and 2) we will already have REST parsing code in the client because the searching, browsing, etc are done in that manner thru the webapi. I've been looking around a bit at embedded webserver code, and i found these: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/IP/CSharpEmbeddedHTTPServer.aspx http://www.codeplex.com/webserver thoughts? -- .~. i dunno when it was released, but ubuntu now ships with qt4.4, which i
was able to build banda with. so...
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install libqt4-opengl-dev
should get all the necessary qt4 stuff. the only snag is that there is
an error in the libqt4-opengl-dev package: one of the .pc files is
present in both libqt4-opengl-dev and libqt4-dev. i worked around this
by running the above commands, then:
$ sudo apt-get -f install
which installs everything except the libqt4-opengl-dev package, then
$ sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite \
/var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-opengl-dev_4.4.0-1ubuntu4~hardy1_i386.deb
which ignores the dpkg error.
yay for package management. at least i don't have to compile qt4.4 tho,
which takes forever on my laptop.
