I could have sworn that the last time i was using a unix odbc layer, i didn't pay anything for it. technically a PITA to use, but it sort of worked. For you to access a remote ODBC source could be the cost part I'm guessing. If its just an access database, put it on a network share I'd say is the only other option if unixodbc is unable to do it freely.
