I've used MComix on a few distributions and it does not support RAR out of the box, which at times is more of a hassle than you might think. (There are plenty of distributions that do not want to offer the binary unrar, and others make it a bit of a hassle to get rar working.)
Of the free software alternatives the best seems to be Unarchiver, which offers command line versions for Linux (even packages for Ubuntu)
the code is LGPL
It would be great if you could change MComix so that it could extract RAR files out of the box. Presumably on Ubuntu this would take a bit of glue code to get the right command line incantation and a dependency check to make sure theunarchiver was installed.
