I recently installed xfig on my OS X system, with the utility macports.
I am not able to insert figures in xfig. For instance, if I try to insert a png image, I get the pop-up error message:
Incomplete Picture Object object at line 11.
Incorrect object code at line 13.
libpng error: IDAT: invalid distance too far back
Errors occured when reading PNG file
/path.to.file/name.png
I tried other images with different formats (jpeg) with a similar error.
Any thoughts on this issue?
Thanks,
Peter

The first lines "Incomplete Picture Object.." and "Incorrect object code.." indicate that a fig file is read, which is strange. Opening xfig, clicking on the "picture" button, creating a box and then following the popped up menus to insert an image does never read a fig-file. The error messages raise the suspicion that the "Open" file dialog was used, which can only be used for fig files.

The problem described here is probably the same as reported in ticket [177]. The fix is, unfortunately, to either compile from the development sources or use an older version of xfig. The next release which contains the fix is planned to be published soon.

I am looking forward for the next release. Will it be ready in 2024? About 30 years ago, when I started using xfig, there was a functionality that I apprreciated: turning on arrow crosses (a vertical and a horizontal line crossing at the cursor position). This helped a lot to align diagram blocs. Don't know why it disappeared. It would be great to have it back.
