How to Use

WATCH A VIDEO VERSION HERE

Step 0: Prerequisites

  • Java Runtime Environment (works on versions 6 and 7)
  • Minimum 1 GB RAM

Step 1: Download

Download "Hunger Games Map Generator.zip" from here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mchungergen/files/

Step 2: Extract

Extract the .zip file using WinZip or WinRAR or comparable software.
Keep all the files that are extracted in the same folder, they all need to be together for the generator to work. Your folder needs to contain at least the "generators" folder to work. Otherwise, you will get an error when the program is run.

If using a Bukkit server, you can put the "Hunger Games Map Generator" folder there and the world and config files (for supported plugins) will be put in the proper place and this will save you time at Step 6. Your Bukkit folder should look something like this:

Step 2.1: HungerArena Options

Skip this step if you are not planning on using the HungerArena plugin.
Otherwise, open the "configs/HungerArena" folder and modify "baseconfig.yml" to have the settings you want the auto-generated "config.yml" to have.

Step 2.2: Backup

Optional but a good idea: backup your Minecraft saves folder and your Bukkit server folder.
This program will delete the folders named "region" and "players" (if they exist) in the folder you tell it to create a new world in.

Step 3: Open

To open the program, double click on HGMG.jar.
If this doesn't work, see Run Errors.

You should then see a window that looks like this:

Choose a generator (typically "Default") from the list. If the list is blank, see Step 2.
You should then see a window that looks like this (if you picked "Default"):

Step 4: Settings

  1. Choose the folder where you want your world to be placed. By default it will go in a folder called "world" in the same folder as the rest of the files.
  2. Choose a settings file if you wish to use something other than the default. The settings files that come with the generator are located in the generator jar file in a folder called "settings files". For info on making your own files, see the page about the Settings File.
  3. Choose a seed if you want, otherwise leave the default.
  4. Choose how big (length by width) the arena should be. See Arena Size for suggestions.
  5. Choose the number of players (default generator only supports 12 or 24).
  6. Choose additional settings (if using "Default with Settings" generator).

Step 5: GO

Click "OK" and watch the window for messages.
If an error comes up, something went wrong and the world was not made.
If a warning comes up, the world is still generated, but some settings or config files may not have been loaded or saved.
Otherwise, once it says "DONE", the world has been generated and the config files made.

Step 6: Copy and Play

There are multiple scenarios of what to do next:
Note: these steps assume you didn't change the world path and it remained the default "world"

  • You want to play the world in singleplayer:
    1. Copy the "world" folder from the folder "Hunger Games Map Generator" into %appdata%/.minecraft/saves
    2. Open Minecraft and choose singleplayer
    3. Double-click on the world named "world"
    4. To change the game mode to survival, use NBTExplorer to open "level.dat" in the world folder and change "GameType" to 0. Or, use the singleplayer commands mod and type /gamemode 0.
  • You want to play in multiplayer and you put the folder "Hunger Games Map Generator" somewhere other than in your server folder:
    1. Copy the "world" folder from the folder "Hunger Games Map Generator" into your server folder. You should make sure your server.properties level-name is "world".
    2. If using a supported Bukkit plugin, locate the folder in "Hunger Games Map Generator" called "configs".
    3. Then open the folder whose name corresponds with the plugin you are using.
    4. Copy the .yml files from inside those folders.
    5. Paste/replace the .yml files in the "plugins/whateverpluginname" of your server folder.
  • You want to play in multiplayer and you put the folder "Hunger Games Map Generator" in your server folder (it checks this by seeing if there is a folder called "plugins" in the same folder as the "Hunger Games Map Generator" folder)
    1. You should be all set, the world and configs should have been copied over to their final locations in the server folder.

The configs folder will have the files needed for the plugin to teleport all the players at the beginning. You need to replace the plugin config files in your server's plugins folder with the ones generated by the HGMG program. So if you are using HungerArena, copy the config.yml from "configs\HungerArena" to "yourbukkitlocation\plugins\HungerArena" and replace the one that is already there.

Does your folder look exactly like the one in the first picture on this page? Also, make sure you have unzipped the folder "Hunger Games Map Generator.zip". If these still don't work, repost here with the exact steps you took and what OS, Java version, and other system details.

Did you extract the .zip folder? You need to have the "generators" folder with HGMG.jar. Inside that folder should be two jar files which are the generators.

I have the exact same problem and I've tried everything, even looking here and the people have had this problem reported many times and haven't solved it once.

Could you post specs such as OS? Architecture? Java version? HGMG version? How are you running the jar? What do the folders look like where you have HGMG.jar and the generators? I haven't been able to replicate this and it would be helpful if someone who is having the problem can help narrow down what might be the cause.

For some reason the commands won't work. I've got the world generated properly, the spawn is bedrock with all these signs, but players can't join because commands won't work. They are being typed correctly.

      skaterzero807 - 2012-07-30

This generator is not a server plugin and there are no commands such as join. You can use the maps it makes with any plugin you want, see here for the one I wrote: http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/hunger-games-map-generator-serve/

Install a Hunger Games style plugin on your server and players should be able to join then, but the command for joining will depend on what plugin you use.

When I start it, the generator window opens, but it's blank, does anyone know what might have caused this? thanks.

Hi, im really excited about this plugin but i have a few questions about use. I know it defaults to twelve or twenty four players but is there a way to make it playable with 4 or five? Also does it work with the multi world plugin? I would love to have it portal linked and just step through to create a game. Thanks for the info

Yes, you can add a schematic called "center4.schematic" or "center5.schematic" to the jar file under the schematics folder. Then enter 4 or 5 into the number of players and it will use that schematic. See the Schematics page for more info.

If you don't want to make a new schematic, you can just use the 12 player option and play with only 5, it seems to work fine on my test server. Anyway, the maps should work as multi-world, they are just normal minecraft world folders.
