Choosing a size for the arena can be difficult. There are four things to consider:
Memory limitations can limit the size of the arena to be less than a certain amount. Using 1 GB of RAM allows arenas up to about 1000 x 1000, which is about as large as you should ever need.
The more players you have in the arena, the more closely packed they will tend to be. A decent place to start is to use the formula below and make a map that is approximately Size x Size. Note that the map should be larger than 250 x 250 no matter what, otherwise everything will be too close together.
Size = sqrt(numPlayers) * CrowdingFactor
Description | Crowding Factor |
---|---|
Slightly Crowded | 75 |
Normal | 100 |
Scarce | 125 |
Nearly Alone | 150 |
As an example, for a normal map with a total of 12 players:
Size = sqrt(12) * 100 = 346.4
so the dimensions should be 350 x 350
The type of map can change the effective density of players. For example, the pointy islands map style has a large area of water, which tends to group players into smaller areas on the islands. For these maps, a slightly larger size may be needed.
The type of map can also change how difficult it is to locate other players. In the default map, it could be too difficult to find other players if the map is too large, whereas it might not be a problem in the desert dunes map style where there are no trees to block a player's view. If there are lots of mountains and trees, the map should be smaller to make it easier for players to find each other.
