    BugMan - 2012-09-25

    Hello,

    Every time I restart my computer MCE Controller 1.5.1 will not boot up and I get a Windows error message asking to close the program or search for solutions online. I have to redownload mce every time I start my computer to get it to work. I am running Windows 7 32bit on a HTPC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there.

    We'll need some more data to be able to figure out what is going on.  Can you please tell me the following:

    * Is there a "More info" button in the error message? If there is, please click it and let us know whatever it says.
    * How are you starting MCE Controller automatically at startup?
    * What happens if you try to start MCE Controller from Start.Programs.MCE Controller directly?

    Thanks.

    My apologies for the delay.  I appreciate you responding so quickly.  I do not have MCE Controller booting up on startup.  I actually was looking on how to do that, but couldn't find it in settings.  However, when I click it's icon on my desktop screen or go to Start -> Programs -> MCE Controller directly, I get an error message from Windows saying MCE Controller has stopped working.  I copied below what is in the View Problem Details.  Thank you so much for looking into this and I'll look forward to hearing back from you with hopefully a solution because I would love to start using this program with my universal remote.

    There's not very much in that dump that tells me much.

    Are you saying that if you download and install MCE Controller, it runs fine until after you reboot?

    Are you sure you have ALL Windows Updates installed?

  • BugMan

    BugMan - 2012-09-30

    That is correct. When I install it it opens up and everything runs fine. It's not until my computer restarts I get the error message. All of my windows updates are up to date. I consider myself semi computer savy and I'm stumped on this one.

    I'm stumped, but might have a way of getting more information:

    Go into the Windows Event Viewer and open the Application log.

    Look for events named "CLR20r3" with event Id "1053". If there are any with "mcecontrol.exe" as the source, copy the details and paste them here.  If I'm right, there should be what is called a "stack trace" in there that will help me.

    Thanks for your patience!

    Well that tells me something…

    You have Send Awake Command turned on (apparently?).

    1) Can you explain how you are using "Send Awake Command"?  What is the recipient device?
    2) Please paste in a copy of your MCEControl.settings file, which should be able to find in "%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Kindel Systems\MCE Controller"

    BugMan - 2012-10-02

    Hello,

    I hope it's getting you close to figuring out the problem.

    1.) I don't know exactly what I'm using the "send awake command" for and i don't know the recipient device.  I do know though that I have my PC configured to wake on LAN because that is what my remote control program said I had to do when I have MCEcontroller working because I have my computer go to sleep after 4 hrs.  My remote is suppose to send a wake on LAN command to MCEcontroller to startup my computer.  I may have set something up by accident for my computer to wake another device, but I have no idea how to change that.  I apologize, but I'm only partial computer savy.

    2.) Below is a copy of my MCEControl.settings file.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <AppSettings xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
      <HideOnStartup>false</HideOnStartup>
      <AutoStart>false</AutoStart>
      <Opacity>100</Opacity>
      <WindowLocation>
        <X>120</X>
        <Y>50</Y>
      </WindowLocation>
      <WindowSize>
        <Width>640</Width>
        <Height>400</Height>
      </WindowSize>
      <ActAsClient>false</ActAsClient>
      <ClientPort>0</ClientPort>
      <ClientDelayTime>30000</ClientDelayTime>
      <ActAsServer>true</ActAsServer>
      <ServerPort>5150</ServerPort>
      <WakeupEnabled>true</WakeupEnabled>
      <WakeupPort>0</WakeupPort>
    </AppSettings>

    I hope this helps us get closer to figuring out the problem.  Thanks again.

    Turn off "Send Awake" in Server settings in MCE Controller.

    For what you are trying to do, you do not need it.  The purpose of that feature is for your computer to send a notification to another device that it is awake and ready.  The fault is due to this being on and the port being set to 0.

    Ok, I had to uninstall and reinstall the program because I couldn't get in the settings screen.  When I reinstalled it and went in the server settings the only thing checked off is enable server and the port field is highlighted with 5150 in there.  I do not have the enable wakeup feature enabled. I closed out of the program and then double clicked on the desktop icon to start up the program and I get the error message still.

    Hello.  Sorry to bother you, but I was just curious if you had any other suggestions to fixing this issue or if your out of ideas and if i'm just SOL.  Thanks again for all of the help

    Sorry you are having these problems. I do not know why  <WakeupEnabled> is set to true and why you can't seem to keep it off.

    Here's a suggestion:  Uninstall MCE Controller and then delete c:\program files (x86)\Kindel Systems.  Search your entire hard drive for any file named "MCEControl.settings" and delete it (tell me if any others are found!).

    Then re-install MCE Controller and see if that helps.

    We'll get this figured out!

    (I Just noticed you said "clicked the desktop icon" above.  MCE Controller's setup program DOES NOT create an icon on the desktop.  I assume this means you created it.  How did you do so?)

    I think I figured out the problem:

    I think MCE Controller has 2 bugs:

    1) It crashes is Send Awake is turned on, but not configured with a valid port (see your config above, WakeupEnabled is set to true and WakeupPort is 0.

    2) When starting the first time, MCE Controller doesn't see configuration info from a previous installation (which will be stored in %userprofile%\AppData\Kindel Systems\MCE Controller\MCEControl.settings).  The first time it runs (this is the bug) it reads from %program files%\Kindel Sytsems\MCE Controller\MCEControl.settings.  That file has the defaults (and thus SendAwake is set to false.  Subsequent loads, it reads from %userprofile%.

    So the work around for you is to make sure that EVERY copy of the .settings file on your computer is deleted. Then don't ever change the SendAwake setting (you don't need it).

    i will work on fixing these bugs…

    Excellent. I'll be able to try your suggestion tomorrow and I will let you know. But, it def sounds like that is the issue. Thanks so much.

    I've release version 1.5.2 that should fix these bugs.  Please download it and give it a try:
