Now none of these come from me, but were posted to the story on the web site that Enrico put up called "Welcome to IOS!". To me two of the technologies do not seem relevant at this time, because one suggests using Ximian's Setup Tools which is tied to GNOME; and the other one is Progeny's PGI. The person who suggest that said take a look at the Elysium Project, but I keep getting 404s when trying to look at a page on their site. Here are the two posts: Package formats=20 Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, August 29 2002 @ 03:23 PM BST=20 you might be intersted in the packaging system use by Elysium Gnu/Linux.=20 http://elysium-project.sourceforge.net/=20 You might be interested in using the Piggy Graphical installer created by Progeny now part of Debian.=20 http://hackers.progeny.com/pgi/=20 I cannot say strongly enough how i think you must use the (Ximian) Setup Tools.=20 http://www.ximian.com/devzone/projects/xst-devel.html=20 Improve, change them if necessary dont waste time developing yet another setup tool.=20 Good luck with your distribution, glad to see that following the LSB is a top priority.=20 Sincerely=20 Alan [ Reply to This | Delete ] =20 =20 PLEASE No more package technologies=20 Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, August 29 2002 @ 02:20 PM BST=20 Great!! a new linux distro is always a good thing and I think that every distro should bring it's own unique take on linux. BUT PLEASE don't bring out yet another package technology. If novice users are ever going to be attracted to linux then a good (easy to use) software distribution and installation technology is necessary and they'll tend to group around the easiest, even as a technically experienced user I simply don't have the time to bother with tarballs anymore. We need competition within the linux distro community and the best way to foster this is to have a standard package system. Their are other areas that need focus now. I'll be intrested to see what your OS is going to offer [ Reply to This | Delete ] =20 So what does everyone think? -- Michael Lauzon Founder & Lead Project Manager InceptionOS Project http://www.inceptionos.org/ mi...@in... --=20 Please don't use http://fastmail.fm (I like feeling special.) |
