Lately I've come up with a more formalized development process. =20 It somewhat resembles Rawhide, but I plan to set it up for=20 better user involvement. For our purposes, I just call it=20 'Gestation' for now, but that might change. What I've planned so far is documented here (choose your=20 preferred format): http://skarpsey.dyndns.org/incept/gestation.kwd (KWord) http://skarpsey.dyndns.org/incept/gestation.ps (PostScript) http://skarpsey.dyndns.org/incept/gestation.pdf (PDF) Most of what I have so far is open for comments and subject to=20 change. However, the first part of it (automated build cycles)=20 WILL happen; otherwise my hair would turn grey a lot earlier=20 than it should. ;) The necessary scripts are already in place,=20 and about 60% of the IOS package base is shifted into Gestation. --=20 Kelledin "If a server crashes in a server farm and no one pings it, does=20 it still cost four figures to fix?" |

Kelledin, Long time, no hear! We seem to have lost Enrico, so I am going to start advertising again for an installation interface programmer on SF. Terry is on his honeymoon, he got married. And, AnonFTP @ ftp.inceptionos.org still does not work for some reason. I am in the process of trying to figure out how to update GeekLog that we use as our web site. I'll read the PDF as soon as I have time, as I am going to be moving from Toronto -- the Capital of Ontario, Canada -- to Ottawa -- the Capital of Canada -- in the next few days. Good to hear from you. I still say if we had something with an installer working for people to download then I see us getting more developers to help with the Project. Yeouch. :( At least with the next programmer who comes along,=20 we'll have the base package set ready for him right out of the=20 gate. That was one of the problems we faced getting in sync=20 with Enrico. One of the side effects of the Gestation arrangement is that I'll=20 have a lot more time on my hands once it's in place. So I'll=20 probably be able to take on some of the other project work... > Terry is on his honeymoon, he got married.=20 > And, AnonFTP @ ftp.inceptionos.org still does not work for > some reason. I kind of figured he would be, so I haven't been bothering him=20 about that. Even I don't disrespect a man's honeymoon. ;) He's=20 bound to have a lot of work on his hands when he gets back=20 though! Too bad we don't have a second admin available; I don't think we=20 have admin rights to our host RaQ. --=20 Kelledin "If a server crashes in a server farm and no one pings it, does=20 it still cost four figures to fix?" |

While we're at it, the first Gestation archive is up now and=20 ready for grabbing. It's just i486 right now (alpha will come=20 soon), and it's located at=20 ftp://skarpsey.dyndns.org/pub/gestation/i486/ . It only=20 contains about 65-70% of the packages present prior to the=20 Gestation shift. The Gestation documents have been updated as well; they now=20 describe the planned layout of the Gestation archive and how to=20 seed and build a Gestation snapshot. The new instructions=20 _should_ be enough to get users started with Gestation; the only=20 known inconsistencies right now are references to a=20 ge...@in... mailing list, and references to a=20 Gestation archive on ftp.inceptionos.org. Obviously neither one=20 of the two can become reality until Terry's back from vacation.=20 ;) Anyone who wants to grab the Gestation archive is welcome to do=20 so. For the purposes of bandwidth conservation (go easy on my=20 connection, and on your time), it's advised that anyone=20 downloading the archive refrain from downloading the "srpms"=20 directory. A properly seeded Gestation environment will grab=20 source RPMs automatically as it needs them. --=20 Kelledin "If a server crashes in a server farm and no one pings it, does=20 it still cost four figures to fix?" |

Any content that's been uploaded will be copied accross though, so feel free to use it. > Too bad we don't have a second admin available; I don't think we > have admin rights to our host RaQ. You've got admin rights on www.inceptionos.org & I'll sort out rights on ftp. soon. I'll have a bog-standard i686 running debian on the internet soon, I'll probably migrate *.inceptionos.org to that, it'll make management *much* easier. I'll check out the gestation stuff later today, looks interesting. -- Terry Churchill : http://www.doc-linux.co.uk/ Looks catch the eye but after that there is a miriad of other factors that come in to play. Likes, dislikes, hobbies, whether they use vi or are forever damned to the depths of hell for using emacs. Important things like that. |

Hmmm...I don't remember ever setting a password or sending my=20 public SSH2 key. Possibly I already sent them a long time ago,=20 and I'm getting senile? In any case, I obviously don't remember=20 my password either. ;) I think I'll attach my SSH2 key now, before I forget. Whatever=20 user account I get, the only special privilege I currently need=20 is write access to the /pub/incept and /pub/gestation FTP=20 directories, preferably via SFTP.
