We need to define our target audiance. It needs to be clearly define. Once we set the scope it needs to be adheared to.
Also, we will not be able to please everyone, so, once we decide who to please, , we make sure we DO please them.
My opinion is that all precompiles be 586 level or higher. (Still too many pentium class machines out there to build for 686.)
comments, suggestions?

Maybe have variants of MaxLinux... like an install for a plain desktop. Some distro( RedHat ) installs to many packages that aren't needed by a simple user. Much like after install..everything is there on the desktop without a need to open a terminal. I think a distro with 2 (600MB) of download needed for install is too much(well they can buy CD's) if u dont need those software..

Can I ask why you'd specifically choose 586+ class machines? If ML's target audience is desktop users then I concur with compiling for 586+, however there are quite a few 486's still in service out there as network servers (firewall's, print servers). By compiling for 586+ you don't gain much (if anything) in speed of program execution and you lock out a complete class of machine (and potential users). Note, Mandrake was pressured into releasing a 486 version of it's distibution, which was precompiled for 586 only.

We need to create Maximum Linux for 386 and up, not everyone has a new machine...and on this I do have to agree with Gord.
