Since the #\, reader macro hasn't been part of the
Common Lisp standard for 17 years or so, it should
probably be excised from Maxima so modern Lisp systems
can build it properly.

Nearly all uses of the #, macro can be replaced with
the modern LOAD-TIME-VALUE form.
