Why do you think it should work?  And how is it supposed to work according to you?   I think it's working as it supposed to.

`flatten(t)` returns a matrix for me.  `t[2]` is the second row of a matrix.  You can't compare a matrix to a number.  If you want the element of a matrix you have to extract the element.  Thus use `t[2,1]` to get the first element of the second row, which is 2 in this case.
