Inside math environment of Lyx, there is an option to invoke maxima, i.e., it is possible to type integrate(sin(x),x) and invoke maxima, which should be installed (i'm telling about experience inside opensuse). The current Lyx's interface allows rather simple expression only. For complicated things I would advice TeXmacs, expressions which are generated with TeXmacs could further used inside TeXmacs itself or exported to TeX and then imported from LyX, if you prefere wysym scientific editor Best regards!
