Looks like the new methods are good enough to use all the time.

I think it is unlikely that there are any parts of Maxima that depend on the
old programs in secret/hidden ways.

  I'm in favor of inserting the replacements.
I suppose if you are nervous about this, you should leave the old code
in there, with ...

#+ignore(defun old-fppi1   .....)

for a while.
At least for those of us who dislike digging through source code control 
programs
to mess with old versions, it would be clear what was changed.
