Maxima does not now provide either a rational function
of polynomial approximation to a data set. Suppose I
have engineering data in the form of inputs X1, X2, ...,
Xn and corresponding outputs Y1, Y2, ..., Yn. Typicaly
our engineering data come in discrete points, but on a
spacecraft, the actual inputs are seldom equal to any of
the given abcissas. That's why it's useful to have an
onboard rational function or polynomial that could
provide a good approximation for the output value. It
could be based upon Marquardts procedure. Outputs
should include the statistical alpha value, residuals, etc.
