#4691 how to use the new version of maxima
i am not sure if it is a bug or not but i just installed a new version of maxima but then i clicked on the new
icon and it said a shortcut has been something like moved or whatever and doesn't work. before i had a different version of maxima . anyway it asks do i want to fix the shortcut and i said yes and then it disappeared. I brought up my original .wxmx files and it still used the older 20.12.2 and not the new maxima. Why. So how do i get the new version of maxima to work ? Why am i having this problem and why does it not use the new version ?
i looked in the bin subdirectory of the maxima 5.49.0 and clicked on the most obvious one to use
maxima.bat but but all it did was bring up a dos window and tried xmaxima.bat and that did not
work either and neither did wish90s.exe. so i am at a complete loss as to why this new version
will not work.
THE old version of maxima had a file wxmaxima.exe of 92347kb but this new maxima
5.49.0 has NO such file so how is it supposed to work ?

Very strange. You are using Windows 11? And the Maxima 5.49.0 installer from Sourceforge?
Can you start it using the start menu (All programs -> Maxima computer algebra system-> wxMaxima (or Xmaxima or command line Maxima))? Do you get any error messages? (Concerning wxMaxima: You can select in the installer, that you do not want to install wxMaxima, but by default it is installed.)
maxima.batis the command line version of Maxima. Andwish90s.exeis the TCL/TK shell (used by Xmaxima).But everything seems to work here - and the release is nearly 3 month old and nobody else reported such problems...

i am using windows 10 yes from sourceforge. I do want to install it . And at first i had an icon but then it said the shortcut link was ...something, a rather standard message windows often gives and i chose to fix it then the icon disappeared and only my prior version of maxima remained. What is this special installer you are talking about . anyway i assume it did all that and installed ok except there is no way to start it and also because there is no wxmaxima.exe file. As far as command line that only goes to DOS. Also will it automatically use the same options etc.. i now have with my prior version of maxima already installed ?
it may have an icon in desktop but i don't know because my computer does not go there often. Do u know how to get to desktop ?
do i have to uninstall my previous version of maxima completely first ? i would like to have it as backup and also want to use the same options i have already setup on that and copy them to the new version in case they are not automatically done by the system so then i can copy the same from the old to the new version.
ok thanks i uninstalled and reinstalled and think i may have gotten somewhere as it does run. But now how do i make it so that when i click on a .wxmx file it uses the new maxima rather than my old. I know and i have done opening the file in the File menu of the new version but i even put my files in the directory of the new version and still when i click on it still uses the old version of maxima.
Good, thanks for the feedback. Concerning how to change the default program for a file extension on Win10: Settings > Apps > Default apps. Or right click on a wxmx (or wxm) file and select "open with..." and then the path to wxMaxima.
Your favourite search engine may find even videos, which show, how that is done. But it has nothing to do with Maxima...
ok i did get that open with new version to work somehow but there is still remaining one bug. The system automatically
copied my settings in the previous version including the configure and startup commands but that particular part is frozen like i mean you can't do anything with that startup 'Maxima commands....Wxmaxima starts Maxima'
and one cannot put any mouse as does nothing. Can't erase or edit what is there though it does give the location of the text commands and i can change that with a text editor if need be but i don't know if it is safe to do it that way which completely outside of wxmaxima So should i try that or not?
that issue u last commented has been solved meaning it does now bring up the new version .
the only issue now is just my above comment the bug in that the startup commands box is frozer one cannot access it in maxima -you cannot type anything in that box 'Start up commands' you cannot edit the box 'Maxima commands to be executed every time wxMaxima starts Maxima'. you cannot type anything in there to change what is already there . Also the same goes for the box you fill out if desired for 'Maxima commands to be executed every at every start of Maxima'
That is a bug in this new version and one could fill them in my prior version but this one u cannot.
I do see where they are located and can get to that text which is outside of maxima directly but don't know if it is safe or the correct thing to do ? maybe i will mess something up i don't know since it is supposed to be able to be done in maxima.
