Repeatedly I've downloaded Maxima-5.41.0-VTK-macOS.dmg, opened it, and copied maxima.app to my Applications folder, but when I try to open the app, after a long "verifying" wait, I get a pop-up error that the app is damaged.
And might your network connection be via an caching proxy that if it
once provided a truncated download will do so every time you download
the same file again?

Which version of MacOs do you use?

Mojave (10.14).
I have a standard network connection and have no such download issues with many other files, including others at sourceforge.

Bugs:
#3473The message about "dmg is damaged" is actually a security error. From what I can tell MacOS presents that message for any dmg which is not downloaded via a approved channel. Other people trying to install Maxima on MacOS have run into that problem before, here are two messages about that:
https://sourceforge.net/p/maxima/mailman/message/35906912/
https://sourceforge.net/p/maxima/mailman/message/35911771/
and here is another link which talks about that error more generally:
https://secure.clcbio.com/helpspot/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=323
I'm closing this bug report, but if you still have trouble with the installer, my advice is to raise the issue on the Maxima mailing list; see:
