For many years I have used Maxima under Windows via Cygwin, even with plots using Cygwin-X. FOr awhile I could compile the source directly under Cygwin, but the past few versions have given me problems. So, I went to installing the Windows Maxima executable, and under Cygwin making a soft link, e.g.,
@lester:/usr/local/bin% ln -s /cygdrive/c/Program\ Files\ (x86)/Maxima-5.30.0/bin/maxima .
I just changed for a Win7 PC to a WIn8 PC and have done fresh installs of all programs. Now if I try this link:
@lester:/usr/local/bin% maxima
Maxima encountered a Lisp error:

Error in INITIALIZE-RUNTIME-GLOBALS [or a callee]: Cannot open the file /cygdrive/c/ProgramFilesx86/Maxima-5.30.0/info/./maxima-index.lisp.

Automatically continuing.
To enable the Lisp debugger set debugger-hook to nil.
Error in CL-INFO::LOAD-PRIMARY-INDEX [or a callee]: The tag RETURN-FROM-DEBUGGER is undefined.

Anyone have a clue as to what has changed?

Thanks.

Lester

    I set the link to maxima.bat (which I did not need to do previously), and this seems to work fine.
    @lester:/usr/local/bin% ln -s /cygdrive/c/Program\ Files\ (x86)/Maxima-5.30.0/bin/maxima.bat maxima
