When invoking maxima-mode, Emacs complains:
Warning: Bug in maxima-mode: it forgets to call `run-mode-hooks'

both maxima-mode and inferior-maxima-mode call `run-hooks' in the last lines of their definition, where they should call `run-mode-hooks' instead.
