Yes, it does appear that the fix needs to be on 1.3.x as well.  I'll 
cherry-pick it.

In the meantime, Lorenzo, you can manually include the fix here:

https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/pull/2319

but this will make it into the 1.3.1 release.
