Did you check that it does break backwards compatibility?

I am confused about this merge request.

commit `[ce8044]` must be a commit of your repository, right?

I never really liked merge requests, and I having trouble finding your commit.

Maybe it is easier you send a good old patch indicating against which
commit that is intended. I think we are faster that way.
